Our Methodology

The research team at Moving Feedback took the time to check in on Roadway Moving, and we did it undercover. We posed as prospective clients and called them up to see what we could expect on moving day. Then, we asked their reps about a couple of different moves while taking notes on how the whole thing went down.

If you’re in a hurry, skip ahead to our pricing breakdown. Or, if you’d rather get to the juicy details, check out our in-depth Roadway Moving review. Otherwise, read on to se learn more about Roadway Moving, and see the services they provide.

About Roadway Moving

Roadway started off back in 2008, and while they may not be the oldest kid on the block, they make up for it with next-level customer service and a dedication to making you move easy. They’ve been around for over a decade, but they still have that hungry-and-motivated startup mentality that keeps them attentive, priced to win, and willing to go the extra mile for their clients.

Roadway Moving has a wide menu of different moving services available for their clients. Whether you need local or long distance moving, help with boxing, and even storage, Roadway handles it all with in-house staff and in-house professionalism.

  • Coast to Coast Moves: While originally from New York, Roadway Moving handles moves that cross the country. While some routes are still not covered, they have a wide map of available offices and locations.
  • Comprehensive Services: Roadway offers a full menu of moving options, including packing, transportation, and unpacking. Unlike other movers, they don’t subcontract their services.
  • Customer-Centric Approach: As we gleaned from our call, Roadway Moving really prioritizes customer satisfaction. Their agents and sales reps provide personalized support and address individual needs.
  • Experienced Team: Roadway does all their packing, loading, hauling, and practically everything else with an in-house team. This translates to a skilled workforce and legit employees handling your move, rather than subcontractors.
  • Transparent Pricing: Roadway Moving keeps their pricing transparent, preventing unexpected costs and fostering better peace of mind. It’s why they request inventory lists before giving out quotes.
  • Limited Availability: Roadway can handle moves to and from places all over the country - except for a few locations. However, they’re still expanding their operations. We weren’t able to get a quote for Chicago to Austin, but we have a feeling that’ll change.
  • Inventory Lists: If you want an accurate quote from Roadway, you’ll have to provide a detailed inventory list. While this does lead to a more accurate moving estimate, it’s an extra step for your end. Is it worth the added detail? Definitely.

How Much Does Roadway Moving Cost?

Roadway Moving gave us estimates for between $4,000 and $7,906.

While their sales rep was able to give us a price window based off of cubic footage, Roadway usually needs an in-depth moving inventory of all the stuff you want to move in order to provide a more accurate estimate.

Unlike other long distance movers, Roadway doesn’t issue prices based on weight. Instead, they provide estimates strictly based on the cubic feet of truck space you’ll need. It makes sense, and it was nice to know they could work off of the number we got from another mover.

A Note About Boxes:

Need boxing services? Roadway has you covered. They can provide full boxing services, but your final price will depend on how many boxes you’ll need, and the size of those boxes.

  • Small boxes: $18 apiece (includes box, packing materials and labor)
  • Medium boxes: $22 apiece (includes box, packing materials and labor)
  • Large boxes: $26.50 apiece (includes box, packing materials and labor)

Our first move was from California to Texas, and we got a quote for $7,906.

Move 2: California to New York

We also asked about a move from California to New York, and got a ballpark estimate for $4000 to $5000 for a one-bedroom apartment.

Move 3: Illinois to Texas

When we do these reviews, we usually also ask for a third move from Illinois to Texas. Unfortunately, Roadway Moving doesn’t offer a route from Illinois to Texas, but we’ll definitely change this section when they start!

Our Experience with Roadway Moving

We had a great call with Roadway. All of the agents we spoke with were super helpful, and the whole process went smoothly. Over the course of our call, we were also brought up-to-speed on some sketchy practices that other, less-reputable moving companies have been resorting to. That kind of attention and care really goes a long way.

Did We Have to Wait?

Like other moving companies, Roadway has an automated menu in place that you’ll have to navigate. Fortunately, it only took one or two keystrokes to get in touch with a live human, and we were on hold for less than a minute.

As for transfers and redirects, we did get handed off to a couple different specialists to iron out our (admittedly complicated) move. However, this is easily chalked up to a skill issue on our end, as our research team had dialed the New York department’s number, and we needed to get in touch with their West Coast operations office instead. But this did show us that their other offices are just as competent and helpful!

Who Helped Us Out?

First we spoke to Alex. He was informative and pleasant on the phone, and when we mentioned that two of our moves were heading out from California, he was quick to get us transferred to the right department. We were put on hold for less than a minute before the next agent picked up.

Next, we spoke with Krystal. Like Alex, she was really helpful, pleasant, and professional. It seemed like she was more of a dispatcher: She took down some of our basic information, and transferred us to the next and final agent in the sequence. We only spent five minutes or so explaining the situation, and she was able to direct us to the next agent.

Finally, we were transferred to Justin, our sales rep. Just like before, we were put on hold for less than a minute before we connected with him. Once we got in touch with Justin, everything kept going smoothly. He was helpful and informative, and over the course of the call it became really clear that he had our best interests in mind.

What Kind of Services Do They Provide?

Justin walked us through how our move would go, and then he took the time to walk us through the list of services provided by Roadway. He explained at length how Roadway determines the price of a move (typically by inventory list and square footage), and then he told us about the different packing options we could choose (full packing and self-packing).

Justin also took the time to explain that Roadway doesn’t subcontract services or other movers. This was awesome peace of mind, and it was great to hear that Roadway has their own trucks, their own movers, and even their own storage warehouses.

Over the course of our call, we learned more about what goes into a move, including how to keep ourselves safe from scams. Justin even went the extra mile by texting us the website for the FMCSA’s database of movers so we could look up other movers and see how they stack up!

What’s the Insurance Situation Like?

When we asked about insurance, we got answers: Roadway isn’t an insurance provider, so the most they can provide is the federally-mandated $0.60 per pound of coverage for any items lost, damaged, or destroyed. However, Justin pointed us to Baker Insurance and Movinginsurance.com in case we needed anything more substantial.

While chatting with Justin, he also pointed out that many best moving companies that claim to offer insurance companies may actually be buying their insurance from Baker and Movinginsurance anyways. Sometimes, it’s just smarter (and cheaper) to go straight to the source.

Were We Offered Any Discounts?

Ordinarily, we ask about a discount – but Justin beat us to the punch! He asked us if we had any promo or discount codes while we were mapping out our move. Unfortunately, we hadn’t, but he added one for us anyways. Thanks, Justin!

What Were Their Delivery Options Like?

For our moves, the timeframe would be about 7 – 10 days, and up to 21 days in extreme situations. Because Roadway typically issues precise estimates based on an inventory list, Justin gave us a window based on their own averages. If you’re able to provide a complete inventory list, you’ll end up with a more exact delivery window.

Move Weight Distance Duration
Los Angeles to Austin ~2,100 pounds (inventory list) 1,383 miles 10-20 Days
Los Angeles to New York City ~2,100 pounds (inventory list) 2,799 miles 10-20 Days
Chicago to Austin 3 Bedroom Home (Phone estimate) 1,120 miles 2-9 Days

Roadway Moving Around the Web

Don’t take our word for it – take a look at Roadway’s reviews from all around the web:

“I couldn’t have done it without roadway movers! I’ve used them 7 times over the years and they are the best! Punctual, professional, reliable, CAREFUL, and respectful of our belongings. They are the best and i won’t use any other mover again! The entire experience was stress free!”

Micaela E. Via Angi

“Roadway Moving made my move from my storage unit in Hamden, CT to my apartment in Austin, TX simple and stress-free. They packed all my things, wrapped all my furniture, and then met me at my new place where they brought everything in and even put my bed together before they left. The movers (in CT and in TX) were extremely kind, professional, and efficient. You will not regret using Roadway Moving for your move, trust me.”

Roadway Moving FAQ

Does Roadway Moving offer discounts?

According to our call with Justin, Roadway will offer discount and promo codes to ease the price of moving. They usually release these codes in partnership with influencers, but Justin hooked us up with one of these codes to sweeten the deal.

How long will my move take?

Moves with roadway will take from 7 – 10 days, and in extreme cases up to 21 days. It’s important to remember that some small moves actually take longer than larger moves: Some movers prefer to make pickups and dropoffs along the way to avoid sending half-empty trucks all over the place.

When is Roadway Moving most busy?

Like other movers, Roadway is most busy during the summer months. If you’re able to schedule your move away from June, July, and August, you could end up saving big.

Does Roadway Moving offer insurance?

Roadway Moving isn’t an insurance company, so they don’t offer any insurance coverage beyond the $0.60 per pound deal that movers are required by law to provide. However, our rep pointed us towards Baker Insurance and Movinginsurance.com in case we needed more substantial coverage.

Does Roadway Moving subcontract movers?

According to our conversation with their representative, Roadway Moving employs their own trained and experienced movers rather than subcontracting the work. This ensures a higher level of control and quality assurance throughout the moving process. It’s great peace of mind, and it’s impressive that they have their own trucks, movers, and storage facilities.

Our Recommendation

Overall, we had a great experience with Roadway Moving. While they don’t have coverage for every route across the country, they do offer excellent service, excellent attention to detail, and really helpful staff – even if you end up calling the wrong department! We definitely recommend Roadway for your relocation needs. Give them a call to get started!
