How Much Does North American Van Lines Cost?

When we called North American Van Lines to ask about the cost of a long-distance move, we received a quote for $10,419.52. It sounds steep (and it kind of is), but keep in mind that prices vary based on factors such as distance, size of the move, and additional services needed.

Our Hypothetical Move: Virginia to Wisconsin

Our move was from Virginia to Wisconsin and weighed in at 11,375 pounds. North American Van Lines gave us an estimate of $10,419.52. The longer and heavier a move is, the more you’ll end up paying – and that was especially true with North American Van Lines.

Why So Pricey?

Every move is different, and 11,375 pounds is on the heavier side. Long distance movers calculate weight by inspecting all the stuff in your home (and from the big brands, this usually means an in-home inspection and estimate, which isn’t the most convenient). A three-bedroom house usually weighs between 7,000 and 9,000 pounds.

But there’s more to our price than just the weight and the distance. Big-name movers cost more than mom-and-pop shops. While you may be getting a big brand reputation, the logo on the side of the truck ends up costing you way more than hiring a trusted best movers.

Our Experience with North American Van Lines

We called up North American Van Lines to see how they treated their customers, and overall we’re pretty happy with our experience. It was a straightforward process to get connected with a real person, and they provided us with plenty of info about what to expect from our move.

Did We Have to Wait?

Most moving companies have automated systems to handle callers, but fortunately we didn’t have to wait long to connect with a real moving agent. When we called North American Van Lines, we were pleasantly surprised to hear a real person on the other end within just a few minutes of dialing in.

Who Helped Us Out?

We were assisted by Tracy and Heather, who were both courteous and professional. Our agents created a file for us, took down our contact information, and asked us about our move. Both Tracy and Heather took the time to answer our questions, and they also kept us well-informed by providing valuable insight.

What Kind of Services Do They Provide?

Tracy and Heather walked us through a comprehensive list of the services offered by North American Van Lines, taking into account our specific needs. Every move is different, and it’s good that North American Van Lines provides a range of different services to cater to their customers.

What’s the Insurance Situation Like?

North American Van Lines provides insurance coverage, including the minimum required by federal law ($0.60 per pound of lost, damaged, or destroyed property). They also offer full coverage options under their Maximum Value Protection (MVP) plan.

Full coverage insurance may or may not be available through a third party, and movers usually require that their customers pay for packing services if they offer full coverage insurance. With this in mind, it’s nice to know that North American has more in-depth insurance options.

Were We Offered Any Discounts?

When we got our quote from North American Van Lines, they offered us their Pricelock guaranteed rate reduction. However, like other moving companies, North American may offer additional discounts. We definitely recommend calling ahead and asking if there’s other ways you scrape some pennies off the total price.

What Were Their Delivery Options Like?

When we asked North American Van Lines about our move from Virginia to Wisconsin, they told us that our move would take about 7 days. They also provided a day-by-day breakdown of how the move would go.

According to North American, it’d take 1 day to pack everything up, 1 day to load everything into the truck, and 5 days to get it all delivered. We appreciated the exact dates, but we know better than most that there’s always delays when it comes to moving. Still, having the day-by-day table was pretty useful.

“The whole move went very smoothly, thanks to Kris at the front end and John our very professional, careful and personable mover. Highly recommend and would use them again without hesitation. All our belongings made it without problems or damage.”

Robert. Via Consumer Affairs

“Moved by the date range given. Movers were very professional at both ends. Used a local mover, Jacobsen’s, based in LaCrosse, WI to load my belongings for a move to Prescott, AZ. Everything arrived in good condition–not a single item broken or missing. Did not charge me extra for unloading from larger truck to a smaller truck at destination, so I was pleasantly surprised”
