How Much do Long Distance Movers Cost?

Long-distance moving companies can cost anywhere from $1200 to $13400 – and beyond. This is a huge window, but it all depends on the amount of stuff you’re hauling, and the distance you’re traveling.

If you’re trying to get the best rates possible, we recommend getting a quote from at least 3 of the best long-distance movers from our list.

Don’t worry – we already screened them ahead of time. The quotes are free; all you have to do is click any of the “get quote” buttons to check out what a mover can do for you and how much money they’ll cost.

What to Look for in long distance Moving Company?

It’s important to find the right mover for the job. When you’re looking for that perfect long-distance moving company, keep a few things in mind to make sure they’re up to the task:

  • Certification: A legit moving company will have proper licensing and certification. If you have a mover in mind, make sure you check for their USDOT number and their Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) number.
  • Insurance: Under federal law, movers have to provide a bare minimum of insurance coverage for all your stuff. This minimum is $0.60 per pound of belongings lost, damaged, or destroyed. See if the moving company offers any additional coverage, too.
  • Reputation: Google and Yelp are your friends. Customer reviews are a great indicator of whether a moving company is worth your time. If a mover is featured in other review sites, that’s even better.
  • Binding Estimates: A binding estimate (AKA flat-rate pricing) means whatever’s on the quote is what you end up paying. Your movers won’t adjust the price before, during, or after the move – unless you hit them with a surprise piano or something.

Frequently Asked Questions

A long distance move can take anywhere from 1 to 21 days, but the exact amount of time can depend on factors like the distance of the move, the amount of belongings being transported, the availability of movers, and the chosen route.

While many people assume moving less stuff means waiting less time, movers don’t like to send half-empty trucks around. Instead, they’ll bundle moves together and take care of several in one trip, which means additional delays for pickups and dropoffs.

A long distance move typically costs between $3,000 and $6,000, and sometimes more. The amount you pay largely depends on the total distance moved and the amount and weight of the shipment – but there are additional fees that come in to play.

You may be charged more if there are stairs or elevators involved, or if you’re moving during peak moving season (June through August). Other services such as packing and disassembly may mean a pricier move, too.

The sooner the better. We like to recommend hiring movers at least 2 months before the big day. Keep in mind, if you’re thinking of moving during peak moving season (pretty much the entire summer), it might be hard to find movers at the last minute.

If you’re flexible on your moving dates, it gives you a little bit of wiggle room when you’re trying to book a mover. As a nice bonus, some movers even offer discounts for flexible pickup and dropoff dates.

Sorry, Mr. Pink. In the moving industry, tips are both accepted, and expected. Unless a mover explicitly declines tips or gratuities, you should budget out 10% to 20% of the final cost of the move as a tip for your movers – to be divided between the entire moving team, of course. Don’t forget the driver.

Unless something’s really gone bad, it’s common practice to tip your movers. Feel free to be generous and tip towards the high end of that 10% – 20% window if your moving team has done a stellar job.
