What to Look for in Interstate Moving Company ?

It’s important to find the right mover for the job. When you’re looking for that perfect long-distance moving company, keep a few things in mind to make sure they’re up to the task:

  • Certification: A legit moving company will have proper licensing and certification. If you have a mover in mind, make sure you check for their USDOT number and their Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) number.
  • Insurance: Under federal law, movers have to provide a bare minimum of insurance coverage for all your stuff. This minimum is $0.60 per pound of belongings lost, damaged, or destroyed. See if the moving company offers any additional coverage, too.
  • Reputation: Google and Yelp are your friends. Customer reviews are a great indicator of whether a moving company is worth your time. If a mover is featured in other review sites, that’s even better.
  • Binding Estimates: A binding estimate (AKA flat-rate pricing) means whatever’s on the quote is what you end up paying. Your movers won’t adjust the price before, during, or after the move – unless you hit them with a surprise piano or something.

Adams Van Lines

  • Customized services
  • Specialized in last min moves
  • Binding Prices
  • Family owned & operated

Adams Van Lines scores our second spot thanks to their impressive collection of customer reviews and awards. We love when movers showcase their reviews and feedback, especially since 5-star reviews are so rare in the moving industry. Adams displays these with pride, which makes it super easy for us (and potential customers) to learn what to expect on the big day.

There are a lot of sketchy moving companies out there, but Adams Van Lines is one of the good guys. They’re more customer-centric than a lot of other movers, meaning they’ll care more about your experience and your feedback than sticking to some quota. They’ve been at it for years, and if they keep it up, they’ll be in the industry for many more years to come.

Our Methodology

At Moving Feedback, we analyze moving companies based on what real customers are saying. If you’re searching for the best in the business, every review counts – and so do these other key metrics:

Frequently Asked Questions

Hiring an Interstate moving company can cost anywhere from $1990 to $13400 – and beyond. This is a huge window, but it all depends on the amount of stuff you’re hauling and the distance you travel.

A long distance move can take anywhere from 1 to 21 days, but the exact amount of time can depend on factors like the distance of the move, the amount of belongings being transported, the availability of movers, and the chosen route.

While many people assume moving less stuff means waiting less time, movers don’t like to send half-empty trucks around. Instead, they’ll bundle moves together and take care of several in one trip, which means additional delays for pickups and dropoffs.

The sooner the better. We like to recommend hiring movers at least 2 months before the big day. Keep in mind, if you’re thinking of moving during peak moving season (pretty much the entire summer), it might be hard to find movers at the last minute.

If you’re flexible on your moving dates, it gives you a little bit of wiggle room when you’re trying to book a mover. As a nice bonus, some movers even offer discounts for flexible pickup and dropoff dates.

Sorry, Mr. Pink. In the moving industry, tips are both accepted, and expected. Unless a mover explicitly declines tips or gratuities, you should budget out 10% to 20% of the final cost of the move as a tip for your movers – to be divided between the entire moving team, of course. Don’t forget the driver.

Unless something’s really gone bad, it’s common practice to tip your movers. Feel free to be generous and tip towards the high end of that 10% – 20% window if your moving team has done a stellar job.

Search online, check Google Maps, and read reviews. Verify licensing and request quotes from local movers to compare pricing and services.

Get at least three to compare pricing, services, and timelines. Ensure each estimate is based on the same inventory.

A binding estimate locks in your price. A non-binding estimate can change based on the actual weight or services used.

Local movers often provide loading/unloading, truck rental, packing, unpacking, and short-term storage.

Local moves often cost $100–$200/hour for a 2-person crew and a truck. Rates vary by city, move size, and season.

Yes—most moving companies provide free in-home or virtual estimates. Always confirm there’s no fee before scheduling.

Avoid large cash deposits, insist on a written inventory-based estimate, verify licensing, and steer clear of companies without a physical address.

Many offer storage-in-transit or warehouse storage for short- or long-term needs.

Yes—most sell or include boxes, tape, and protective wraps. Ask if these are part of the estimate.

A long distance move is generally any relocation over 100 miles or one that crosses state lines.
If it’s an interstate move, it’s regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and the moving company must have a valid USDOT number and interstate operating authority.
Moves under 100 miles are usually considered local.

Book early, declutter to reduce costs, get binding estimates, label boxes clearly, carry valuables yourself, and confirm your mover’s USDOT licensing.
