What to Look for in a Long-Distance Moving Company

It’s important to find the right mover for the job. When you’re looking for that perfect long-distance moving company, keep a few things in mind to make sure they’re up to the task:

  • Certification: A legit moving company will have proper licensing and certification. If you have a mover in mind, make sure you check for their USDOT number and their Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) number.
  • Insurance: Under federal law, movers have to provide a bare minimum of insurance coverage for all your stuff. This minimum is $0.60 per pound of belongings lost, damaged, or destroyed. See if the moving company offers any additional coverage, too.
  • Reputation: Google and Yelp are your friends. Customer reviews are a great indicator of whether a moving company is worth your time. If a mover is featured in other review sites, that’s even better.
  • Binding Estimates: A binding estimate (AKA flat-rate pricing) means whatever’s on the quote is what you end up paying. Your movers won’t adjust the price before, during, or after the move – unless you hit them with a surprise piano or something.

Native Van Lines

  • Excellent customer service
  • Full Packing and Unpacking Services
  • Flat-Rate pricing
  • Highly professional crew

With a ton of premium moving services, it was easy to choose Native Van Lines as our number 3 recommendation. Their range of options and add-ons for moving and hauling all those expensive, fragile, or bulky items is seriously impressive, and if you need to move a piano, pool table, or anything else that requires extra TLC, Native Van Lines has your back.

Most people assume “premium moving” means “premium prices”, but right from the start, Native Van Lines set out to shatter that expectation. Since they were established a few years back, they’ve been delivering premium moves at affordable prices – and their specialization in fragile and high-value hauling means their moving teams are some of the steadiest in the business.

Our Methodology

At Moving Feedback, we analyze long-distance moving companies based on what real customers are saying. If you’re searching for the best in the business, every review counts – and so do these other key metrics:

Frequently Asked Questions

Most moves land between $2,700 and $10,000+. For a 1,000-mile move, a studio or 1-bed is often $2,000–$4,000, a 2–3 bed $4,000–$7,000, and a 4–5 bed $7,000–$12,000+. Price depends on distance, shipment weight or volume, dates, service level (self-pack vs full packing, unpacking, crating), and access at each home (stairs, elevator, long carry, shuttle). Extras like storage, packing materials, and valuation coverage add cost. To get a firm number, do a virtual or in-home inventory and request an itemized written estimate from at least 3 licensed interstate movers.

A long distance move can take anywhere from 4 to 21 days, but the exact amount of time can depend on factors like the distance of the move, the amount of belongings being transported, the availability of movers, and the chosen route.

While many people assume moving less stuff means waiting less time, movers don’t like to send half-empty trucks around. Instead, they’ll bundle moves together and take care of several in one trip, which means additional delays for pickups and dropoffs.

The sooner the better. We like to recommend hiring movers at least 2 months before the big day. Keep in mind, if you’re thinking of moving during peak moving season (pretty much the entire summer), it might be hard to find movers at the last minute.

If you’re flexible on your moving dates, it gives you a little bit of wiggle room when you’re trying to book a mover. As a nice bonus, some movers even offer discounts for flexible pickup and dropoff dates.

Sorry, Mr. Pink. In the moving industry, tips are both accepted, and expected. Unless a mover explicitly declines tips or gratuities, you should budget out 10% to 20% of the final cost of the move as a tip for your movers – to be divided between the entire moving team, of course. Don’t forget the driver.

Unless something’s really gone bad, it’s common practice to tip your movers. Feel free to be generous and tip towards the high end of that 10% – 20% window if your moving team has done a stellar job.

A binding estimate locks in the total cost. Binding-not-to-exceed means you pay less if the weight is lower than estimated. Non-binding estimates can change after weighing.

Yes—many offer storage-in-transit for short-term needs or warehouse storage for longer periods. Ask about rates and maximum storage time.

Movers generally won’t transport perishables, plants, propane, gasoline, paint, aerosols, or hazardous chemicals.

Declutter to reduce weight, pack non-essentials early, label boxes clearly, and keep important documents, valuables, and essentials with you.

Move during the off-season, be flexible with dates, self-pack where possible, and consider a consolidated shipment.

Yes—most provide full packing, partial packing, or fragile-only packing. These services add cost but can save time and protect valuables.

Check their USDOT number on the FMCSA website to verify interstate operating authority and complaint history.

Many offer additional coverage for pianos, antiques, or high-value electronics. Always declare these items before moving day.

Request an in-home or virtual survey, provide a complete inventory, and ask for a detailed written estimate with all fees listed.

A long-distance move typically includes an estimate and planning, packing with supplies, furniture protection and disassembly, secure loading and interstate transport, delivery with placement, and optional unpacking or debris removal. Many movers also handle specialty items, offer valuation coverage, and provide short- or long-term storage.
