Why Are People Relocating to Different Cities and States?
When you look at the United States, you will discover that citizens move from place to place a lot more than people throughout Europe or other places in the world. The fact of the matter is, most Americans will live an average of 11 places in their lifetime – and that’s an average! In Europe, that number is 4.
What makes such a big difference? Why does it matter and what reasons do people have for moving? Let’s take a closer look at all of those things so that you can see why Americans are moving from place to place on a regular basis.
Why Are People More Mobile Here?
The long and short of it is this: circumstances. The “American Dream” used to be we move away from home, go to college, get a great career, get married, and have 2.5 kids, a dog, and a white picket fence. Nowadays, that dream looks different for everyone and, in some cases, people will move away and then come back to their hometown after the American Dream fails them.
While it sounds disappointing, it really isn’t. It’s a fact of the world we live in and what it is that we’re trying to do with our lives. Many people still find what they want to do with their lives and end up settling down in one location or another, depending on circumstances.
The Main Reasons for Moving Long-Distance
As mentioned, circumstances are the biggest reason that people decide on moving to a new location. Let’s take a closer look at some of the major circumstances that people face when they are thinking about any sort of move.
This is, likely, the most common reason that people move from one place to another. They may be moving to a new location for their current job or they may be moving because they’ve gotten a new job. Maybe they want to change jobs or they are unemployed and they want to live in an area where they are more likely to get a job.
In today’s economic climate, people are likely changing jobs quite often and, as a result, moving happens a lot more often as well. That’s why you will see people moving from place to place, sometimes on a regular basis, so that they can continue to get more opportunities.
This is tangentially related to the employment/career thing, but it’s often in its own category as well. Many college students move away to go to college, which gives them a lot of opportunities and information that they may not have had without that move. In some cases, the move isn’t super far away; in other cases, these students will move across the country to get their education taken care of.
Then there’s the question of education past the bachelor’s degree. More often than not, a graduate student is only going to have one or two choices for a Master’s and/or Doctorate program, since the programs are highly selective and only admit a handful of people every year. As a result, they will likely have to move away so that they can continue their education.
Being Closer to a Person of Importance
We’ve all heard and read stories about people who ended up moving away from home in order to pursue a potential partner. While this may sound risky to do something like this, there are studies that show that moving in together prior to marriage could be very beneficial for their relationship as they grow older.
There are other people of importance that you may want to move closer to as well. As your parents age, you may want to move back to be closer to them. If your brothers or sisters have kids of their own, you may move closer to them as you get older as well. In any of these instances, people are moving so that they’re closer to the people that they care about. It helps with family ties and can develop some positive relationships as a person grows older.
Finding a Better Place to Raise a Family
If you are raising a family, you want to be sure that they have everything necessary to thrive together. Whether you’re looking at school districts, available extracurricular, churches in the area, or crime rates, you know that you have ideas for what it is that you want your children to grow up with.
We all want our children to do well and, if you move from a less-than-ideal area to an ideal one, you’re among many people who decide to do the same.
Desire to “Start a New Life”
In some cases, people just want to start all over again. Whether they’ve had a bad past, they’re dealing with a breakup, or they are trying to cope with other problems, this can be a really healthy and good thing to do.
Starting a new life could include everything that we’ve mentioned above, but there are other factors that may be involved in the decision to step out of your comfort zone and move out of state or to a new city that you didn’t live in before.
What to Keep in Mind For Your Relocation
For many people, moving is just a fact of life, and there are a lot of things that you need to be sure to keep track of what it is that you need to do. Moving can be an affordable option if you go with the right company and, as you work out what you need to accomplish, you can have a plan together.
If you’ve moved a lot in your lifetime, remember – you aren’t the only one, and there are options that will allow you to sort out what it is that you can do to make it easier for yourself when all is said and done. There are many options to consider and, when you work out the details, you will feel a lot more confident about what your next steps should be for your move.
