Certification: A legit moving company will have proper licensing and certification. If you have a mover in mind, make sure you check for their USDOT number and their Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) number.

Insurance: Under federal law, movers have to provide a bare minimum of insurance coverage for all your stuff. This minimum is $0.60 per pound of belongings lost, damaged, or destroyed. See if the moving company offers any additional coverage, too.

Reputation: Google and Yelp are your friends. Customer reviews are a great indicator of whether a moving company is worth your time. If a mover is featured in other review sites, that’s even better.
